A member of the Media and Publicity sub-committee of the Presidential Declaration Committee, headed by Dr Bello Haliru, gave this hint to LEADERSHIP last night.
“Under the circumstances the party finds itself today, I think a one-week postponement is being considered for presentation to Mr. President,” he said, adding that barring any change in plans, the postponement may be announced today.
It was, however, learnt that this (postponement) is yet to be discussed by the committee, the president and the PDP national leadership.
The party also appears confused regarding how to handle the Adamawa State governor, James Bala Ngilari who is interested in contesting the seat he is presently occupying.
With this new development, I wonder what is really going on in the all united PDP we all know.
President Goodluck Jonathan will launch a new slogan ahead of his formal declaration to contest the 2015 presidential election.
The theme of the campaign slogan will be: “Nigeria first, Nigeria always, let’s do it together.”
The media team of the presidential declaration committee, led by former publicity secretary of the PDP, Sen. Aniette Okon, yesterday declared that the new slogan would serve as the campaign slogan ahead of the elections.
Okon said over 2000 groups, PDP and women groups would be attending the occasion tomorrow.
Speaking with newsmen yesterday, Okon also justified the declaration of the president on Tuesday in spite of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls remaining in captivity, saying efforts to get them out are still on.
Other members of the committee at the press briefing are Moji Makanjuola, Chief Andy Agaji, Comfort Obi, Hon Tunde Akogun, Sen. Nicholas Ugbane, Dr Bilkisu Magoro and Alhaji Adamu Yaro Gombe.
Sen. Okon said: “On Tuesday, 11th November, President Jonathan will announce his decision and determination to seek the mandate of Nigerians to serve them for a further four years. Over 2000 groups, including his party- the PDP, stakeholders, women groups and civil society groups will be attending this epoch occasion. For us, it is a momentous occasion that will be encrypted permanently in the annals of the history of the evolution of good governance for the people of this country.
“We will take this opportunity to declare the main message of this event which will form the compelling force for the drive towards meeting Nigerians of all segments of our society. That is why you have been inundated with a new slogan: ‘Nigerians First, Nigerians Always.’ That is the battle cry of the PDP administration and the president as we go forward to seek the mandate of Nigerians.”
On the release of the girls, he said: “We cannot say that until we find the girls we should not renew our faith in Nigeria. Their rescue is an ongoing effort. Of greater concern is their safe return rather than the bravado of the army to get them out; which can result in a pyrrhic victory. We have had situations where the army marches into such situations and comes back with woes.
“As long as there is a window of opportunity to negotiate and bring back these girls, we will bring them back.”
On the funding for the presidential declaration, Okon said the money came from private individuals and not government funds.
“It is not costing Nigerians anything. The process for declaration is an entirely private affair of the president. Many individuals have chipped in (with donations), and I don’t think it is beyond their right to do so,” he said.
